the director as acrobat

the director as acrobat

a frame from Dusan Makaveyev's "innocence unprotected". Makaveyev often took a collage approach in his films, most notably in the essential "wr: mysteries of the organism." here, he takes a serbian melodrama called "innocence unprotected" made in 1942 under German occupation and selectively tints and hand-colors passages; these are intercut with then present-day (1968) footage of surviving cast members, including the fellow on the right, a death-defying acrobat and love interest who happens to also be the director of the 1942 film. contemporary footage of the grey-haired acrobat show him still unafraid to test the limits of the human body; at one point he takes a steel bar and bends it using his teeth as a fulcrum. he spits out the tooth or two that succumb to the show of strength. makavejev's most famous films, wr and "sweet movie" are joyously sexual. "innocence" is appropriately less sexual, though no less a celebration of the human body.

crippled detectives

Ed Park in the village voice
As much as any book I know, Crippled Detectives transcribes the dream state, not just in its flights of fancy and logic-jumping juxtapositions, but in the mutating narrative tactics, the topsy-turvy focus ... [it] is a wonderfully sustained performance, a triumph of authorial impulse that never bores or confuses even as it runs circles around the helpless, happy reader.

I forgot to mention that Lee Tandy Schwartzman was all of seven years old when she wrote it.
via the village voice and maud newton.

a sample:
"Anne, where are you?" said Sylvia. They found Anne dead with a bullet in her forehead, lying on the floor dying with red fingerprints on the gun and a note which read:

A foolish girl who called the police first sight of me and if you want to live keep the police out of this or you will soon have a blown up Europe and 9,000,000,000,000 dead people including you.

Signed,
Red Romer

Their parents cried, Lisette screamed, Lee shuddered, and Sylvia gasped and the nurse fainted, but it seemed Anne was laughing. She opened her eyes and stood up. “Good trick I played on that Red Romer,” she said, and all saw her taking a piece of plastic off her forehead. Then everybody started laughing. The nurse woke up and rubbed her eyes and laughed too and went to do research.

art!

Face to face with Freud
In the early days of his success half a century ago, Lucian Freud was a charismatic playboy, a lady-killer with an Alvis. He mixed as easily with Soho lowlife as with Mayfair toffs. Frail now, stick-thin, stooped, his face bloodless, his nose like a hawk's bill, I see him shuffling up Holland Park Avenue to Lidgate, the bespoke butchers, to buy steaks for the whippet; woodcock, quail and snipe for his human sitters. In crumpled chinos and laceless trainers, a thin grey scarf around his collarless neck, there's more than a hint of old Steptoe. Yet with an income estimated in 2003 as 12m a year, he is twice as rich as Robbie Williams, they say, and despite the geriatric grunginess, he can still mesmerise women old enough to be his granddaughters.

the art of unintended consequences

"I think it's sort of indecent to have things so worked out that they end up like you thought they would. You think I want to be what I am? You have to expose yourself to more, and see what the consequences are."

--Robert Rauschenberg in the New Yorker.

simpsons for the blind

The Simpsons as Described by WGBH
DVS is a godsend for blind viewers - how else could you follow the weekly couch gag? But as with any subtitled movie, there's a lot of editorializing that goes on. In this episode, Homer pretends to smoke a joint at one point and the DVS description of his action only says 'Homer pretends to smoke.' In another scene, Marge and Homer start to go at it under the sheets, and the DVS description dares not to describe their sexual cartoon antics. Unfortunately, other technology out there which addresses the problem that blind people face with television strikes me as unworkable - charting the visual action through sounds. Article on that here. How would you translate the couch gag into a series of squeals and whistles?

Man Busted For Manicuring Without License
The manicure performed without a license was undertaken right outside the state Board of Barbering, Cosmetology and Esthetics office.

'The reason I'm doing this is because it's one of the harmless things I can do to prove that the law is unjust,' Fisher said. 'Without the government's permission, you can't do nails, hair, lot of other things.'

Fisher said his manicure movement was inspired by the movie 'Ghandi'

I never spend much time in school but I taught ladies plenty. It's true I hire my body out for pay, hey hey. I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs, blown up for Raquel Welch. But when I end up in the hay it's only hay, hey hey. I might jump an open drawbridge, or Tarzan from a vine. 'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that makes Eastwood look so fine.

Barnaby The Bear's my name, never call me Jack or James, I will sing my way to fame, Barnaby the Bear's my name. Birds taught me to sing, when they took me to their king, first I had to fly, in the sky so high so high, so high so high so high, so - if you want to sing this way, think of what you'd like to say, add a tune and you will see, just how easy it can be. Treacle pudding, fish and chips, fizzy drinks and liquorice, flowers, rivers, sand and sea, snowflakes and the stars are free. La la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la la la la la, so - Barnaby The Bear's my name, never call me Jack or James, I will sing my way to fame, Barnaby the Bear's my name.

mp3s - because i'm like that

and because I've finally unpacked records that had been boxed up for years. here are a few vinyl transfers (from long-oop titles) complete with surface noise and grounding problems:

ambitious lovers - let's be adult

arto lindsay once described himself as "james brown trapped in the body of don knotts." this shoulda-been-a-hit is from envy, the first album by ambitious lovers, in which arto married the noise of dna with what would become the tropical funk that made the bulk of his 90's solo work.

bunk dogger - french lessons

a uk pub-rock satirist was bunk dogger. actually, I don't know who he is/was (and google isn't any help), but this was one of a few dogger airs that got played on whfs back when it was 102.3 and "alternative" wasn't just another buzz word. "french lessons" has that elusive quality of much great art from lolita to the office: the ability to produce pleasure and discomfort at the same time. what *is* his tone here? the first-person narrator affects a ridiculous french accent and pines over an underage english schoolgirl, a gaggle of whom are pictured on the cover of the accompanying album, first offence. but what could have been simply a charming ballad fit for the benny hill show turns into a minor tragedy; the narrator may camp up his role as lech, but the schoolgirl plays it straight and disaffected; the alienated younger generation defeats her melodramatic elder, whose affected accent cannot hide the unrequited longing to hear those chimes at midnight again. there is a world of emotion in this silly song, all of which I of course recognized when I first heard this song at the tender age of thirteen.

the transit of venus

I stumbled upon these near 14th and Vermont in an area teeming with hotels, and not far from the headquarters of the washington post. the shoe is in situ, but the bottle was laying on its side not two feet away. the imagination runs like a little girl, or stumbles and slurs like a really big girl. not pictured is the flower box right before this one, in which I found an empty can of vienna sausage. forensic analysis could determine if these three items are from related incidents.

blow-up

Still-Lovers artist's statement by elena dorfman:
What began for me as playful curiosity - how to photograph men having sex with 125 lbs. of a perfectly formed synthetic female - rapidly turned into a serious exploration of the emotional ties that exist between men and women and their dolls. This exploration forced me to evaluate my own notions of love and what it means to value an object - a replacement human being, in effect - as real.

PiL on American Bandstand

Public Image Ltd: Information From Answers.com
The teenage dance show American Bandstand was, circa 1980, entirely innocent of such things, with a history beginning with the likes of Frankie Avalon and extending to the mild end of '70s pop-rock. PiL's booking there revealed a latent fiendish streak in host Dick Clark. The band mimed to the bleak soundscapes of 'Poptones' and 'Careering,' from Metal Box, with Lydon haranguing the cameramen and making no effort to conceal that he was lip-synching. The studio audience made a valiant, but futile attempt to dance and stay in character, ruined by Lydon's good-humored incitements to storm the stage. General chaos broke out, and the show ended with the audience dancing with band members, band members goofing on their instruments, and Lydon chatting with fans while 'Careering' blared on. Clark, in later years, would refer to the appearance as 'One of the ten best American Bandstand episodes of all time.'

HANSEL MIETH: VAGABOND PHOTOGRAPHER is the compelling tale of a pioneering woman photojournalist who created some of the most indelible images of America mid-20th century, but is in danger of being forgotten today. A German immigrant who arrived in this country in the midst of the Great Depression, she rose to become a celebrated LIFE magazine staff photographer, only the second woman to occupy that position. Armed with convictions, perseverance, and talent, Mieth courageously carved out a career in the male-dominated world of photojournalism at a time when very few women were accepted in the profession.

eBay as conceptual art

confessions of an eBay artist by guido catherine
eBay is a labyrinth of search words, doors, and links; it gives the opportunity for each and every participant to leave their mark, whether by bidding, listing or asking questions. With these thoughts, I realized I had started to weave a web in my little corner of eBay. I thus began to list items that would appeal not only to my friends, but also to strangers. It was to be an experiment in finding participants, perhaps collaborators, in projects which I would conceive.

My first such project was to wear an ugly shirt for 7 days starting at $.99...

harlan erskine - ten convient stores

artist's statement:
This project on the convenience store is concerned with the consumer culture of immediacy, 24-hour availability, information overload, and the loss of local identity. The images were made after midnight and photographed with a 4"x5" view camera in a straight-on objective style. I was influenced in equal parts by the German photographic team of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s straight shoots of industrial landscapes and Ed Ruscha’s 1963 book Twenty Six Gasoline Stations.
