learning to feel

learning to feel
Originally uploaded by a nameless yeast.

I recently took a closer look at a friend's new sig:

Guess I'll have to break the news
That I got no mind to lose

Now I guess I'll have to tell 'em
That I got no cerebellum
Gonna get my Ph.D.
I'm a teenage lobotomy
RAMONES

The lyric had been seeping in for a few weeks, and now that the boring photos discussion is gearing up again and the concomitant notion of an aesthetic/spritual emptying, I see this song is really about the openness of youth, the resilience, the sense of potential because *nothing* is settled and defined. Of course Joey can get his PhD - he can be president! He can do anything! As a teenager, having no mind to lose is a dangerous and exciting thing. As an adult, it's even more thrilling. Joey Ramone knew this. Brian Wilson knows this. The lyric validates the stripped-down basics of the music and vice versa. It can be anything. It can be Hanson.

This is what Pants does.

concerto in chartreuse

concerto in chartreuse
Originally uploaded by a nameless yeast.

The negative space was born of necessity, as someone's head blocked the view forward and I lay in wait for the soloists to bob and weave out of harm's way. I was fascinated watching them dance in such fashion, the musical interplay becoming physical. From a Capitol City Symphony chamber concert @ the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

thumbs for peace

As we walked through the march, Snelson would go up to pretty women and other photogenic characters saying, "We're from Denmark - can my friend take my picture with you?" He shot some 400 pictures with my digital, and I shot nine rolls of film, the most I've ever shot in a single day.

John was wont to approach even those who seemed intimidating. But this was a carnival for peace. In this convivial atmosphere, dozens of people accepted when John, in the guise of a touring Dane accompanied by a mysteriously Filipino cameraman, asked for a picture. It wasn't until after the march was over, and we had left the grounds, that his photogenic advances were rejected, by a moustachioed subway worker, who in a curious mirroring of the days events, was discouraged by his Asian colleague.

School band plays [dj shadow's] 'endtroducing' with real instruments
The after-school percussion group at Minnetonka High School, Minneapolis, rehearsed for months and can now play two tracks from DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' album. The music was arranged by 25 year-old geographer/law student/vibraslap enthusiast Brian Udelhofen, who teaches the group.

the laughing cow in my head

Different cheese brings different dreams
A new research claims that different types of cheese can give you different kinds of dreams. Hence, if you wish to bring on nostalgia, do not forget to eat Red Leicester before you retire for the night.

the gilmore girls bus

the gilmore girls bus

more from last weekend's trip to the pg county fair with birdcage et. al. more of my pictures here. the wb bus had a table full of promotional items for their hit series. however, you had to get a raffle ticket, which was free, and comec back to check on the drawings they'd hold every 15 minutes. I took a ticket and promptly lost it, and when I stopped by the table on the way back from the animal exhibits, two hours after the sun had gone down, the station was unmanned. the table covered with a tarp. under the tarp, the "winning" raffle tickets were taped aroudn the edge of the table. I was sure I won, so I took one of the gilmore girls magnets as my prize. like something out of Irish literature, isn't it.

hanson babylon

"Stop the Bop" for Katrina
Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, Pa., has a fun fundraising program called 'Stop the Bop.'

Suggested by a few members of the student council, the school is playing Hanson's 1996 hit 'MMMBop' through the loudspeakers before classes begin, between periods and during lunch. The idea? Annoy students into donating; have them pay to stop the music.

meaningless ...

meaningless ..., a site of magnetic fields covers, is updated weekly. did you know that? a bit of meaninglessness I missed a few weeks back is boy omega's version of "papa was a rodeo," which sounds a bit counting crows-fied. is the negation of irony by dint of emoting vocals really an irony-enhancing gambit?

new this week: the harvey girls do "the book of love". if you haven't heard their original "good morning bubblegum," you should be taken out into the woods and shot!

a belated birthday present. one of the wheels isn't attached right so when you wind it up and let it run it goes in circles like something out of a herzog film. on slick surfaces, the monkey cannot get purchase so it humps suggestively in place. a soild half-hour of fun for all.

the forest and the other

the forest and the other
Originally uploaded by a nameless yeast.

janet cardiff's "her long black hair" is a guided audio-walk of central park. the narration is a bit heavy-handed but the field-recorded sounds are both pleasant and disorienting; when you walk past a duck pond you hear ducks but they may not be the ducks before you - or may not be the ducks before you at that moment; when you walk past a steep stone outcropping, you hear one kid shout warnings to another not to get too close to the edge; you look up and around and don't see them. it's a clear, beautiful day, and there are ghosts (as the narrator might say). this shot is very atypical of me (maybe I'm not as ironic as I'd like to think I am; after all, I thought the movie shown on the bus ride to ny, will smith in hitch, was kind of cute until I thought about it and the romantic-comedy encouragement of behavior that in the real world would amount to no less than stalking; not to mention yet another romanticized other who teaches the not-other - need I add, the not-other who can afford to hire the other? - how to get down), like that cheesy w. eugene smith shot of his kids wandering into the woods, but it stuns me.
